How to Change Text Size Procreate
StyleFrame Team6 min read
To change text size in Procreate, double-tap your text, tap the Aa button to open Edit Style, switch to the Design tab, and drag the Size slider right to enlarge or left to shrink. The change applies to whatever text is highlighted. The same steps work in Procreate Pocket on iPhone.
Step-by-step: change text size in Procreate
- Add or select a text layer. Tap the wrench (Actions) icon, choose Add, then Add Text. If the text already exists, tap the layer on the canvas.
- Open the editing state. Double-tap the text. The keyboard appears.
- Open Edit Style. Tap the Aa button on the keyboard toolbar. The panel has three sections: Typeface, Design, and Attributes.
- Go to Design. Tap Design at the top of the panel. You'll see sliders for Size, Kerning, Tracking, Leading, Baseline, and Opacity.
- Drag the Size slider. Right makes the text larger, left makes it smaller. The value shown beside the slider is the current size, and the canvas updates live as you drag.
- Apply the change. Start working on another layer to close the panel. Double-tap the text and choose Edit Style whenever you want to reopen it.
If you can't see the text change, check that the text is actually highlighted. The Design settings act on the selection, so an empty selection can make it look like the slider is doing nothing.
What happens to the text box when you change size
When you change the Size value, the text box keeps its width and adjusts its height to fit the new type size. That's why large sizes can cause words to wrap onto extra lines instead of running off the edge. If your title suddenly breaks across three lines after you bump the size, widen the box by dragging its side handles, or reduce the size slightly.
This behavior is useful for layout work. You can lock in a column width for a lower-third or caption block, then tune size and leading until the text sits right inside it.
The other Design sliders that affect perceived size
Size is rarely the only control you need. Text that looks too small or too large is often a spacing issue.
- Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter pairs. Use it to fix awkward combinations like "AV" or "To".
- Tracking adjusts spacing across every letter in the selection. Set kerning first, then use tracking to open up or tighten the whole word. Wide tracking on small caps is a common title-card look.
- Leading controls the space between lines. It only matters once you have two or more lines.
- Baseline moves the selected text up or down relative to the line, which helps with superscripts or optical alignment.
- Opacity changes the transparency of the text itself.
A practical rule: change size first, then kerning, then tracking, then leading. Each earlier adjustment changes how the later ones read.
Change the size of only part of your text
Procreate lets you style words or characters inside one text layer differently.
- Double-tap the text to enter editing mode.
- Drag the selection handles over the word or letters you want to change.
- Open Aa, go to Design, and adjust Size.
Only the highlighted characters change. This is handy for emphasizing one word in a headline or building a mixed-size lockup, such as a small label above a large title, without creating separate layers.
Resize text with the Transform tool
You can also scale a text layer with the Transform tool, as you would with other layers.
There are trade-offs worth knowing about:
- Scaling with Transform is quick for composition and layout, but the Size slider is the cleaner choice when you want precise, repeatable type sizes.
- Heavier transformations such as distort or warp may stop the text from being editable as live text. If you may need to change the wording later, duplicate the text layer and hide the original before warping.
- Scaling a raster layer up can soften edges. Increase size through the Size slider where possible so the type is re-rendered at the new size instead of stretched.
Troubleshooting common text size problems
The slider's maximum still looks too small. Size values depend on your canvas dimensions, so the same value can look tiny on a large canvas and huge on a small one. Check your canvas size and choose size values accordingly.
Text looks blurry after resizing. This usually means the layer was scaled as a raster image or rasterized earlier. Delete the scaled version and recreate it by setting the size through Edit Style.
Only some of the text changed. Part of the text was selected, not all of it. Reopen Edit Style with the full text selected and reapply the size.
The font has no bold or italic option. That's a font limitation, not a size problem. Available styles depend on the typeface you choose, and some fonts offer only a single style.
A custom font is missing. Procreate can import font files from the Files app, including OTF and TTF formats. Once imported, the font appears in the Typeface list.
Set up your canvas so text sizes carry into motion work
If your Procreate text is headed into After Effects, Premiere Pro, or a Nuke comp, decide on resolution before you set type sizes.
- Match your comp. Create the canvas at your delivery dimensions, such as 3840×2160 for UHD, so type sizes map predictably when you import.
- Work at a larger size if you plan to push in. If the shot involves camera moves or scaling inside the comp, a canvas larger than your comp gives you headroom.
- Export with transparency. Export the layer or full canvas in a format that preserves transparency. Hide your background layer first so it doesn't come through.
- Keep text separate from art. Placing text on its own layer lets you swap or reposition it in your compositing app without repainting anything.
Remember that Procreate is a raster app. Unlike After Effects text layers, exported type won't stay vector-editable, so finalize wording and size before exporting. Keep a duplicated, still-editable text layer in your Procreate file in case revisions arrive.
Quick reference
FAQ
Is there a maximum text size in Procreate? Size values depend on your canvas dimensions, so a larger canvas lets you work with bigger numbers. If the Size slider doesn't reach as large as you need, you can scale the text layer with the Transform tool, keeping in mind the quality trade-offs.
Can I change text size on Procreate Pocket? Yes. Double-tap the text, open Edit Style, and use the Size slider in the Design section. The text box keeps its width and adjusts its height.
Does changing size affect other text layers? No. Edit Style applies to the selected text on the current layer only.
Can I keep text editable after exporting? Not in flattened formats like PNG. Keep the original text layer in your Procreate file so you can edit and re-export when revisions come in.
